The Results
Smarter Travel Sutton was launched in September 2006 and since then, loads of people have found better ways of getting where they want to be. Here are some of the many ways we’ve already helped people in our borough.
Walking paths – While talking to a man in Kingston, our travel advisor was able to recommend a peaceful walking path to the local shops that he had no idea existed. Now he uses the walk to de-stress and get a much-needed 30 minutes of exercise each day.
Better cycling – After starting a new job in Sutton, a Kingston man was cycling to work along the busy main road through Cheam. But after being given some advice and cycle maps from his travel advisor, he was able to find a new route that took him through parkland and quiet residential streets instead.
Better Accessibility – In a visit to North Cheam, one of our travel advisors met a visually impared woman who needed to make regular visits to the Moorfields Eye Hospital. She’d never had much luck getting there on public transport so our travel advisor found a simple, accessible route, and called her back to talk her through it. The woman was delighted!
Travel outside Sutton – When a woman on Cotwold Way asked one of our travel advisors how she could visit a relative outside the borough using public transport, we had a tailored information pack including a printed map and journey timetable ready for her within half an hour.
Older Travellers – A large number of older residents in Worcester Park told one of our travel advisors that they had trouble with the cost of transport. Our travel advisor told them all about getting a Freedom Pass, plus how and where to apply for one. Now they take advantage of free travel almost every day.
