The Business Travel Network survey results are out!
22nd April 2008
The results of the Business Travel Network surveys in Sutton Town Centre and Cheam Village have now been analysed and the key findings are as follows:- 1337 Sutton staff and 201 Cheam staff responded to the surveys.
- Of the Sutton respondents, 33% travelled to work by car alone which means that 67% of staff are currently travelling sustainably.
- Of the Cheam respondents, 50% travelled to work by car alone which means that 50% of staff are currently travelling sustainably.
- 58% of Sutton respondents lived within 5 miles of Sutton Town Centre and 71% of Cheam respondents lived within 5 miles of Cheam Village. Therefore, there is a high proportion of respondents who could either walk or cycle to work.
- Of the Sutton respondents, 30% travel for work. Of these people, 43% of staff indicated that their main mode was driving alone, taxi or other, which was quite often aeroplane. This means that approximately 57% of staff use sustainable modes of transport when travelling on business with 38% selecting the train.
- Of the Cheam respondents, 33% travel for work. Of these people, 48% of staff indicated that their main mode was driving alone, taxi or other. This means that approximately 52% of staff use sustainable modes of transport when travelling on business.
- People would consider walking if there were improved lighting and security on their route to work.
- People would consider cycling if there were better, safer cycling routes and improved shower and changing facilities at work including lockers.
- People would consider buses if the fares were cheaper and there were more direct, frequent and reliable bus services available.
- People would consider using the train, tube or tram if the fares were cheaper and there were more frequent and reliable services.
- People would consider car sharing especially if there was help finding a car share partner or there were preferential parking.
- The survey indicated that there is potential to implement smarter working practices especially working from home and flexi time. There was also scope to introduce video-conferencing in businesses in Sutton Town Centre.
Based on the above results, area wide travel plans have been drafted. We will be asking for your comments on these over the coming months.
In addition, Colin Buchanan Transport Consultants will be visiting businesses in the near future to provide you with site specific travel survey results and help you develop a travel plan statement.
